Writing Sensitive Material

If you choose to write a book on sensitive material, then it is highly recommended that you use a pen name when choosing to write on the subject which could be viewed as sensitive. There are several reasons for doing so and you will quickly understand why it can be important.

Writing on sensitive material can often bring a wave of reviews both positive and negative ones. While the positive reviews are welcomed ones, the negative reviews would not be welcomed by you or your family. If you have young children, this is something to consider. Pen names can protect your children and family from some of the bad or negative publicity you might endure.

Writing on sensitive material can encircle writing on romance and regardless of how explicit or not the material is can often prevent you from being taken as a serious writer in some genres so choose your material and your pen name carefully. Obviously, Danielle Steel and Nora Roberts wouldn’t have to worry about this but some writers would need to worry about how their chosen genre and material now could look to the publishers or readers of the genre choice and material later.

Being too opinionated as a writer can hurt a writer’s reputation too but if you don’t care, then it isn’t a problem. However, even if you don’t care, remember it can hurt your sales of some material later. If you must be opinionated, then choose a pen name to help you ward off the bad press you may receive for venting your opinions.

It’s great fun, as a writer, to take on sensitive subject matter and material. However, understand that for every writing action there is a reader waiting to read, judge and review. Determine if that matters to you.
